Klarios Valley
The Klarios or Karkotis River, with a length of almost 25 km, stems from the Troodos Mountains and until it reaches Morphou Bay, passes through the Solea Valley.
The beautiful Solea valley is located along Nicosia – Troodos road (56 km from Nicosia, 56 km from Limassol via Kato Amiantos). The picturesque mountain villages of Galata and Kakopetria are popular resorts with many hotels and restaurants but also retain a large part of their traditional architecture. Both villages are famous for their Byzantine churches. Other beautiful villages in the area include Evrychou, Flassou and Korakou.
In the area of the villages of Katydata, Linou, Flassou, Evrychou, Korakou, Tembria, Kaliana, Sina Oros, Galata and Kakopetria, the river has created one of the most beautiful valleys of the island. Along the river there are artificial canals where water flows to the villages of the valley and leaves its cool waters to both humans and animals.
The Karkotis River, which eventually expands to Morphou Bay, is one of the few rivers in Cyprus with a continuous annual flow, which favours the creation of a wide variety of natural habitats, as well as crops and hence a rich natural landscape.
The site has been integrated into the Natura 2000 network. The aim is to protect natural habitats and wildlife species.
