The Mastre Philippou Fountain
The Mastre Philippou water fountain can be found near the Galata village square. It bears the inscription: “ΒΡΥΣΗ ΤΟΥ ΜΑΣΤΡΕ ΦΙΛΙΠΠΟΥ” (Mastre Philippos’s Water fountain) and it was built in 1986. It was built by the late Philippos Loïzou. During his lifetime, Mr. Loïzou had offered much to his hometown of Galata, as well as to the whole Solea region. He stood out in the Solea region due to his many donations to charitable projects, his love and financial support for the completion of educational projects.
The inhabitants of the Solea valley have been indissolubly tied to the Karkotis River since ancient times and have created a water distribution system in their villages so that everyone can benefit from the uninterrupted flow of water throughout the year.
The Galata community is a result of outstanding cultural heritage. Built at an altitude of 620m above sea level, on the banks of the Karkotis River. The village is surrounded by lush greenery consisting of fruit trees and wild plants. Impressive wooden balconies and stairs adorn traditional-style houses and six Byzantine churches, with pyramid roofs and rectangular tiles, stand proudly in the village.
